Last Chemo!!!!

Update I posted on Facebook after my last chemo last Friday…
Once again must say I am truly blessed to have such wonderful family, friends, and caretakers in my life as I continue my journey towards “cancer survivorship.” Thank you one and all: you’ll never know how much the “like”’s, “comment”’s on facebook, phone calls, emails, messages, the blogs on BFAC and other expressions of caring and thoughtfulness have made my days brighter and my life all the sweeter! Was so anxious to get this last chemo treatment behind me and was the first one through the door at the cancer center @ 7:20 am. My appts were for lab’s @ &7:30, doc @ 8:00, then back to the chemo infusion room for my bags of meds. Was really starting to get perturbed when after having my blood drawn I sat in the waiting room until 9:15 watching them call person after person back to the exam rooms for their doc appt. I had never experienced this before, they always seemed so efficient. My hubby saw how upset I was starting to get and got up and said something to a few of the nurses about how I’d been there for 2 hrs and was wanting to get my treatment going. Well with no explanation for the delay, they said they’d see what they could do and five minutes later I was in with the doc. Doc remarked my blood pressure seemed kind of high today, which is not usually the case and we chalked it up to the anxiety of my wait. She also remarked on how my hemoglobin levels have continuously fallen below normal levels as the treatments have progressed which is to be expected with the drugs I am being given. So, effectively, I am experiencing anemia, along with its symptoms of fatique, weakness, shortness of breath on exertion, but with the knowledge that as this is my last treatment, once the chemo has worked its way out of my system I should begin to improve and I am so excited about that. Into the chemo chair I went, first came the usual 4 bags of different side effect meds, then the 2 magic chemo drug bags. Good friend Nancy showed up about noon with a celebratory flower arrangement! Her visits and the presence of my hubby by my side on my chemo days have been so cheery and uplifting! Finally, at 2:20 the needle and tubes were removed and I could say this chapter of my life is finished! I have a CT scan scheduled for May 15th and am hoping for NED (no evidence of disease), and I have no indications from my docs, my bloodwork, or any symptoms to believe that it should be otherwise. So hopefully will be sharing this diagnosis soon with everyone. Then it was celebration time. Nancy took us out to eat. She asked where I wanted to go and I said the Tilted Kilt was close by – a fairly new pub & eatery in the area, and I was curious about it. What fun! Whilst knowing alcoholic beverages can be a bit dehydrating, I thought celebrating with one would not set me back too dramatically and ordered a Caribbean Kilt (rum and fruit juices). Our drinks arrived and we offered a toast up to the completion of my chemo, and to a cure for cancer sufferers everywhere! The Tilted Kilt was a hit. The atmosphere was sports barish but with some side rooms where we could have a conversation and be heard. The food was delish…I had the cheesesteak…yum! The waitress was a breath of fresh air, and was excellent eye candy for the hubby (think Hooters but with short pleated kilts). We told her we were having a celebration and she asked what for…and we told her the last of my chemo treatments. Instead of getting morose or apologetic…she was so cheerful and full of congratulations and best wishes. And…she surprisds us and brought us out a big ice cream sundae with three spoons and said this is on me! Delightful! Receiving phone calls from the kids and my brother Paul…so great to get their congratulations as well! What a wonderful day! Life is great! Thanks again, everyone! —

Congratulations on your last chemo day. I am glad you went and had a real cocktail. Much better than those chemo ones. I hope you get your NED news on the 15th.
Be Well

Congrats Carol! Take this time to let your body heal and flush all those chemo toxins out! Sending healing vibes and hugs to you! Peace….Carla

I’m so happy that your last chemo is over. Great way to celebrate too. Hugs to you!

Awesome. My last Chemo is next Wednesday the 2nd. I am going to ring that bell so loud you will probably hear it all the way from Colorado to Indiana :) Now, I wonder when it is appropriate to change my status from cancer fighter to cancer survivor?

God bless.

I’ll be listening for the bell ringing celebration. It feels so good to be at this place and have that behind me. Will be thinking of you on the 2nd!

Yay! So glad you’re done and can now enjoy getting back on the road to good health! Hugs-Ann

Carol, what great news, all except the unbelievable long wait to see the Dr.
Yesterdeay was supposed to be my 6th treatment but my labs that day said my hemoglobin, wbc’s and platelets were too low. So I had to be typed and crossed and went in today to the hospital for infussion of 2 pints. They said my color looked better already when I left. Hopefully I will have my treatment next Weds. Not sure if that is it, Dr. mentioned maybe I would have 7 altogether. I am almost afraid to end treatments because I know they are doing something. You are so inspiring.
Linda

Hoping that your counts allow you to get your next treatment. I’m anxious to see how good of a job the chemo did as well and hope to get good results on my ct scan and cancer marker tests! Wishing you well…
Carol

Congratulations! I’m sure NED will be dancing with you :) We just had a Tilted Kilt open here in Baltimore, now I want to go check it out! Wonderful that you are finished!

Love and hugs and high fives!

Congratulations Carol! I am so so happy for you! And what a way to celebrate! Now you can recoup and recover from the effects from the chemo! Here’s to NED on your next scan and a fabulous cancer free future! Sending hugs and lots of yahoos! Have a wonderful day! Love ya! Eileen

Oh yeah, nothing better than the elation one feels after the last treatment! And I never get tired of reading everyone’s descriptions of that feeling. Kudos!

wow finished your chemo. I am thinking about you. I have my second chemo on the 25th of May, It sure is a journey. I read stories like yours and it gives me hope that I will be as strong as you and all will be well.

Chemo #5 complete-ONE TO GO!!!!

Home from chemo treatment #5. Told chemo doc how treatment #4 kind of kicked my butt a little bit and she let me know that the side effects are often cumulative. Also my hemoglobin blood work results were low but not dangerously so, and she said that could have contributed to my higher level of fatigue from chemo #4. Good news is that other blood work results were in normal range so my risk of infection is not increased right now and my platelet count is good. Arrived as usual at 7:30 a.m. Blood work then doc visit then into chemo room about 8:45 for the chemo infusion that lasts about 5 hours. I receive 4 iv medications to treat side effects and 1 bag each of 2 different chemo drugs. Then they flush my port wih saline solution for a little while before injecting some anti-coagulation medication into it before removing the access needle. Then I am free to go home. As usual hubby Charlie by my side and good friend Nancy stopped by and visited a few. She also dropped off a birthday present (57 tomorrow!). I have been venting by email to her my frustrations in dealing with my side effects and saying how I wish I wasn’t so whiney as I used to have lots of patience and used to let all my troubles roll off my back. Told her how I needed to focus on the philosophy of the serenity prayer more often. What a good listener…her present for me was a lovely framed rendition of the “Serenity Prayer” and it had a music box on back with the tune:” The Lord’s Prayer”. Once again must say how truly blessed I am to have such wonderful friends, supporters, co-workers (they chipped in to get me an Outback gift card for my birthday…yum!), family, and hubby! Thank you one and all! Another wonderful day! ONLY ONE MORE TREATMENT TO GO! April 20th will be my last one and my prognosis looks good at this time. Also looking forward to my birthday celebration at my daughter’s tomorrow!
